CELEBRATING ORGANIC SEPTEMBER

CELEBRATING ORGANIC SEPTEMBER

It’s Organic September, people!

So...what is it all about?

Led by The Soil Association, Organic September is an annual initiative
spreading the good word about the benefits of organic food and farming.

Since day one, organic has remained at the heart of everything we do here at Borough Broth. It’s not just a label we put on our pouches - it's a conscious choice that comes from caring about the big picture.

But our organic broths are only as good as the bones that make them, and we’ve got good bones, thanks to the farmers who choose to farm organically even when it costs more, takes longer, and is, frankly, a bit of a faff.

We’re incredibly proud to work with such passionate suppliers, and this Organic September we’ll be spotlighting the people helping build a better food system from the soil up.

Why should YOU care about organic?

Organic farming and food are among the most powerful ways to restore nature and create a more sustainable food system. Let’s break down the benefits.

- Living soil. Synthetic pesticides and chemicals are banned under organic standards. Because of this, organic soil holds more living microorganisms than conventional soil. A living soil means a resilient soil and on average, organic farms store more carbon than conventional farms and up to twice as much water.

- Animal welfare. No farming system sets a higher welfare standard than organic under the Soil Association. This means truly free-range animals, encouraged to forage, graze and roam, with strict rules around the food they eat and a ban on the routine use of antibiotics.

- Big on biodiversity. Organic farms have up to 30% more biodiversity than conventional ones, and 50% more bee species specifically. Fewer chemicals and pesticides mean important pollinators like birds and bees and other wildlife can thrive.

- Less pollution. Organic farming restricts the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Instead, organic farmers must build fertile soils naturally. This minimises the risk of harmful chemicals entering our rivers and waterways.

- Not just a label. Certified organic means farmers must meet strict, rigorous standards on soil, welfare and chemical use. It’s independently checked and verified every single year.

This year’s theme? A shortcut to better

The way we eat can make a world of difference. This Organic September, The Soil Association are encouraging people to make small organic swaps in their weekly shop where they can. Showing how organic is a simple, everyday shortcut to something better.

For a little inspo, we’ve created a recipe packed with flavour from some of our favourite organic brands. Citizen’s of Soil, All Things Butter, Celtic Sourdough, Riverford Organic and Isle of Wight Tomatoes,

Organic Brothy chickpeas with blistered tomatoes.

A comforting bowl packed with all organic goodness. Spicy chickpeas and blistered tomatoes, simmered in our Organic Chicken Bone Broth. Served up with a dollop of crème fraîche and crunchy buttered sourdough.
